What birth equity looks like in real life?
• Being believed when you say something feels wrong
• Having your pain taken seriously
• Receiving clear, unbiased information to make informed choices
• Having access to support like doulas, midwives, and lactation care
• Being treated with respect, not judgment—no matter your background
Why birth equity matters (especially for women of color)
In the U.S., Black and other women of color experience:
• Higher rates of maternal and infant mortality
• More medical dismissal and bias
• Less access to continuous, supportive care
These disparities are not because of biology, but because of systemic racism, bias in healthcare, and unequal access to resources.
Birth equity works to change that by centering the voices, needs, and experiences of those most impacted.
How doulas support birth equity
Doulas help promote birth equity by:
• Providing continuous emotional and physical support
• Helping clients understand their options and advocate for themselves
• Creating a space where moms feel heard, validated, and empowered
• Filling gaps in care—especially for those navigating the system alone
Birth equity says:
✨ Your life matters
✨ Your voice matters
✨ Your birth experience matters
